Call or request for Nominations/Applications for The John F. Fanselow Scholarship Award

(click to read a letter from John Fanselow)

All M.A. candidates currently doing courses for credit in Tokyo are eligible to apply for the award. In addition, graduates, current MA candidates or faculty can nominate MA candidates for the award.

Please send your application or nomination to TC by 1st October 2006. There is no special form for the applications or nominations. However each person applying or nominating a teacher presently studying in the MA Program in Tokyo should state in the letter of application or nomination ways that the person meets the criteria for the scholarship listed below. The letter should be accompanied by some type of evidence that shows how the criteria have been met. There is no reason the evidence has to be in the form of printed material. Any media can be used!

Criteria for the John F. Fanselow Scholarship Award

The nominee/applicant has a basic knowledge of and respects the standard literature in the field of TESOL and has an exemplary academic record. In addition, the person will exhibit what have come to be known as Fanslovian perspective. This perspective is reflected in the following characteristics:

  • Creative or original
  • Raises questions about standard, accepted beliefs - somewhat iconoclastic
  • Is likely to influence others or has influenced others?
  • Relates teaching practices to communications outside of classroom
  • Personal experiences related to professional and scholarly experiences
  • Playful and humorous rather than critical
  • Reflects a free spirit
  • Relates the field of TESOL to other areas both in education and those totally unrelated to education
  • Shows dedication to the TESOL profession

Remember, the important part of the application/nomination consists of descriptions of how the applicant or nominee exhibits a Fanslovian perspective, as noted in the characteristics listed above, and evidence to support the description.

I look forward to the applications and nominations. We plan to review all the nominations/applications in the middle of October so that the award can be made at the Commencement Ceremony.

Thank you and we look forward to seeing the applications.
